NY high school hockey player, 17, dies after collapse on ice

A New York high school hockey player is dead after collapsing on the ice.
News 12 Long Island reports Conor Kasin, a 17-year-old senior at Massapequa High School, suffered a “medical event” and passed out during intermission of a charity game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on Saturday. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Multiple people rushed onto the ice to perform CPR on Kasin while awaiting for first responders, Nassau County Police said. The cause of the teen’s death is still unknown.
“It is heartbreaking to report that Connor did not survive. His passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor’s family and friends,” school officials said in a letter to students and families.
The tragic incident occurred during a charity event in honor of a fellow high school student who died in a car crash, according to the New York Post. Sabrina Navaretta, of Syosset, died last year; funds were being raised for a scholarship foundation in her name.
Kasin played for the Sharks Elite Youth Hockey Club and was “probably in the best shape on the team,” coach Jeff Tempone told CBS News.
“It was devastating. It’s a 17-year-old kid — has his whole life ahead of him,” Tempone said.
The New York Islanders offered its “deepest condolences” to Kasin’s loved ones.
“The New York Islanders extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and teammates of Connor Kasin, a beloved member of the Massapequa and Long Island Hockey community,” the NHL team said on Instagram Sunday. “Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
